Skill books are another good way to turn money into personal power just make sure you understand any minimum skill requirement they have. Since you've got lots of money from your trade routes, you can also buy gear on Druid's Isle it's often better than what they sell on the mainland. It sounds like you've probably done the Golden Dust quest (the one that starts on the Entertainer's Street in Marlock City), but if not, it's a great way to get some solid early gear. More then two enemies will get me killed in combat as there is only so much i can do alone.

I would love to know how to get better gear as a rank 2 mage with a spear and heavy armor. I did the quests my character could handel in the rank 1 zone and now all i got are hard quests or quests in higher rank zones. At the moment i am having a hard time getting quests, tho earning money is pretty easy with a good ship and crew, finding quests and new gear tho has been painful. Hm i see, well i use a spear as a weapon, its pretty good in combat tho it feels odd to wear heavy armor and using a spear as a mage but it works so far. (As a Troubadour, buy a sling, scrape together 600 gold for the Archery skill, and spam those illusion-clone things.) They're also nearly as strong in magic as the Mage itself, so you might consider them as an alternate, far-more-playable Mage. In my view, the "easiest" class to learn is Troubadour, though I've heard people disagree. They start out weak in many key skills - Scouting and Combat are the most painful, though they're terrible at Piety too - and the thing they're strongest at, Magic, is very powerful but situational. And since the easiest early way to get a 9-damage weapon is to buy a Quarterstaff from Yellowport, it's a fitting thematic weapon for a mage too. One thing to note as a mage is that your damaging spells are tied to your maximum weapon damage - even when you're not attacking with the weapon itself! Thus, for a mage (or anyone else who learns and uses the mage's damage spells), a weapon that does 1-9 damage is far better than one that does 5-6, even though the second one has higher average damage. Mage is a very challenging class to start with.

If you're into guides, I can recommend these two wonderful ones: there is some grinding until you know where are the big bucks. But you have to find a reliable source of income in order to sustain all your resources, i.e. Also, bad stuff happening is part of the story of your character! Losing your gear and equipment is not the end of the game. You'll need to learn how blessings, potions, house stashes and resurrections work in order to shield yourself from bad stuff happening. Exploring all the temples in each city can give you useful information and contracted work. I recommend listening for rumours at every tavern to gather information and lore, can prove very useful for locating quests or how dangerous some stuff are. You can unveil everything on your own pace. The game can feel like that initially as it's a true open world, you can do anything you wish without a plot guiding you.
